  • The Morning Call

Loch in front of the "Five Sisters"

My Cardinals are back again, eeeping and chirping in the forsythia bushes outside my window.  They are a set of young birds, males already fire-engine red, the females beige with dark eye liner like swatches around their eyes, orange bills and rosy red tails.  What a way to wake up!  The newly released nestlings haven't learned the typical skittish Cardinal behavior; they sit there, eeep, look at me, hop to the next branch, hop up, fly away.  And there I stood only in my boxers and without the morning hazy gaze, when I started to notice the corners of my mouth were stretched, my cheeks tight - I couldn't smile any wider if I tried.
